Abstract: »In chapter 4, “Breaking the Silence: Depictions of Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Violation in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art,” Lisa Rafanelli reflects on her seminar “Women Artists of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque,” providing students with a framework within which to explore the assumption of artistic agency by artists like Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Elisabetta Sirani, among others. Rafanelli discusses her experience teaching this course, and how contextualizing these works, women’s experiences, and the difficult subject matter in which they are entangled allows students to ask questions about the popularity of certain subjects and to reflect on the extent to which we have inherited these norms« (Source: Caldwell, Ellen C., et al. »Introduction: Gender Violence and Art History.« Gender Violence, Art, and the Viewer: An Intervention.
